All week I’ve been listening to DeWayne Julius (DJ) Rogers, whose sublime trio of 1970s RCA albums I rediscovered among my CDs recently. I used to think the best was On The Road Again but I’m not so sure now. They’re all brilliant, all about the gospel-drenched voice and the super-smooth arrangements, the heavyweight session players (Keni Burke on bass, Paulinho Da Costa on percussion etc). I’ve now ordered his debut album, on Leon Russell’s Shelter label, which only saw a CD release in 2012, and includes the often-comped and covered Bail Out. He only ever made 7 albums, and I’m working my way through them, but the last two are vinyl only so I’m saving them as a treat.
